LETTER FROM VALERIE

Valerie Frederickson
Founder & CEO

Helping with Today: Our HR Advisory Practice
When we kick off a human resources executive search, on the initial planning call almost 45% of our clients tell us that they need their new People leader “yesterday.” By the time they’ve decided to hire an HR leader, gained buy-in, assessed their own network and finally ended up in a kickoff meeting with us, some critical and time-sensitive HR issues have smoldered and are now on fire.
The most pressing HR needs these CEOs have are:

  • Placing an interim head of HR who can step in immediately and help with planning, the performance review cycle, learning and development (L&D) plans for leaders, executive-level hiring and a myriad of other activities while the executive search is underway
  • Developing a compensation philosophy and all the programs for both cash compensation and equity, often using Compensia’s and Radford’s data to flesh out programs and gain approval
  • Reviewing all existing HR systems and processes against the company’s strategic plan, and recommending process changes and upgrades
  • Defining requirements for a human resources information system (HRIS), recommending the selection and then managing the implementation of a new HRIS
  • Planning for what the workplace will look like after Covid in terms of office space, company philosophy, employee desires and office assignments
  • Evaluating the current talent acquisition (TA) organization and running it temporarily while making recommendations for its future direction
  • Developing new HR programs including performance management, communications, L&D, compliance, workforce planning and many other HR areas

HR Advisory services are close to my heart because in providing them, we get to help organizations through times of high growth and great change—and make a real difference at a time of need. For me personally, hearing about all the problems a company is having and knowing that with some fast recommendations and introductions I can make a real difference is so rewarding. Just as with executive search and outplacement services, who doesn’t like to be able to swoop in and be a hero?
Speaking of swooping in, have you seen the Avengers video of President-Elect Biden and Vice President-Elect Harris? Whether you voted for them as I did, or hoped for a different outcome, I think that we can all agree that we need leaders now who are kind, moral, responsible, experienced, action-oriented, and who will work to reunite us all, to keep us alive, safe and healthy, and do everything possible to ensure that our world is able to sustain us.
  Best,

  THE COVID CORNER
It is interesting to speak to our friends and coworkers, and to self-reflect on our own behavior, in dealing with the effects of an unexpectedly long Covid pandemic that has no defined end in sight. Early on, I fantasized that the day Covid was over my neighborhood would hold a block party. I even kept a few bottles of champagne for that day.
Now it looks like the end of Covid will be a slow roll. As of this writing, it’s just been announced that by the end of this year we should have vaccines for health providers and some others at high risk, and 1.3 billion vaccine doses next year. But the world has almost eight billion people, and if Pfizer’s vaccine is only 90% effective that will leave some people unvaccinated (so there’s more work needed to meet the global need).
I, and most of you reading this, have a better situation than 99% of the world but I know that I still struggle in dealing with Covid. Yes, I have home schooling nailed for the twins this year with our Little School, but I still feel bad about my son not being able to play football and about neither kid being able to do an indoor playdate with children other than the few in our school. I personally miss being able to fly to Mexico for a week during the holidays where I can feel the warm sun on my face and watch beautiful sunsets. I miss being able to eat in a restaurant, take my kids indoor rock climbing, or have friends over and invite them inside. My family is extremely compliant with masks and social distancing practices, but it does get old. Halloween was fine—we had the last pool party of the season—but now we may be looking at a looong winter.
How are you keeping yourselves positive and upbeat? I’d love to hear.
