Gently Getting Back To “Work”
Yesterday I ventured out on my first business lunch in over a year and can report that I’m not ready for prime time yet. For 13 months I haven’t been in social proximity to humans outside our small bubble. When my lunch companions arrived at the restaurant and chose an inside table, I reacted with horror, and they quickly suggested we eat outside. I sat so far away from them that I ate over my lap. Being out of practice I caught myself giddily babbling on and even chatting up the wait staff instead of talking business. I was also five minutes late and arrived with wet hair and no makeup because I forgot how to get it together and leave my house.
All this, even though I speak to corporate clients all day long over Zoom, I'm vaccinated, and we ate outdoors.
This all ties into the big question of 2021: How we’ll return to on-site work. Companies are busy planning or postponing planning what back-to-work will look like in terms of butts-in-seats, work-from-anywhere, or T-W-Th onsite collaboration days. But how will your more skittish employees feel, as offices open, with activities like shaking hands, dining inside or meeting face to face? We must be gentle to the many people like me who have almost forgotten how to do business in person. I’m normally super extroverted but it will take time to get back to working with people in person and I’m not 100% sure that I want to. I like working at home over the phone and on Zoom and have become used to being a bit of a hermit.
The best advice I received during the worst of the pandemic was to be gentle with myself and others. After this lunch, I realized that I need to do this with myself. I would like to advocate for gentle accommodations for those of us who may take a little extra time getting back to “normal,” whatever that will be.

THE COVID CORNER | ||||||
Getting the Vaccine | ||||||
Yeah! I’ve had both my vaccine shots and am feeling relieved. I qualified because of the in-person, multi-family school in my house.
What does it feel like? I feel joyous that I no longer torture myself 24/7 with fears of dying from the virus or being hospitalized with a tube down my throat. Since I grew up in the U.S. in safe neighborhoods, until COVID I never knew a constant fear of death and I hope that I never do again. My friend who is from Iran grew up there during the war with Iraq, with bombings in her neighborhood, not being able to leave her home or attend school for years at a time. I wish that everyone in the world, starting with all of us here in the U.S., could have the quiet joy of safety. Safety from COVID, safety from racist violence, safety from machine guns. If I believed in God I would say God bless all of us.
