Happy 2021 – Welcome to a New World
What does HR look like for those of you who took a few months off, and are now jumping back into the workforce? This is what we’re seeing as the stock market surges, the virus rages, and a new presidential team spreads sage diplomacy and quick actions on many fronts. Let’s optimistically call this period the Golden Age of Innovation and Healing. A time of renewal, scientific invention, grieving those we lost, reversing global warming, increasing diversity and helping individuals who have suffered financially to get back on their feet.

- Employers are hiring a lot—but this time around, it's more judicious and better-timed.
- A new global employer-employee contract to work-from-wherever-you-want. Employers will agree or find their candidate pools diminish.
- A focus on local and global diversity and inclusion (D&I).
- New total rewards philosophies; technology requirements for everything from HRIS, employee experience, surveys and continuous feedback to remote collaboration tools; and quick compliance solutions for all the states and countries your employees now want to live in.
In both our Executive Search and Advisory services, our clients require experienced, strategic HR leaders who arrive with a playbook and learn each unique culture and subculture of a company. While many HR executives stayed in their jobs through the first part of the pandemic, we’re now seeing both movement to new jobs and increased retirement—-one is not always up for another battle, and sometimes fresh horses are needed. Whatever you choose in 2021, here’s to a great new start.

THE COVID CORNER |

Getting Through a Covid Winter
The safe, bucolic Covid bubble we Northern Californians were living in has burst and the virus has increased ten-fold. When I read this news over the holidays, I considered closing our onsite Little School but did not because all the parents have trusted that I would keep their kids safe and have committed to the entire year. A science article proposed that when the virus surges, the answer is to keep schools open and make them safer. I've added new safety measures: disposable paper masks, all windows and doors open, six feet between workstations, Plexiglass dividers and weekly testing (the teacher manages this, setting the appointments and taking the kids). My pride and joy is a bathroom ceiling fan exhaust system suspended from the vaulted ceiling sucking up and out any virus. Hopefully, the four families will get through the year safely.
As the virus has gotten more prevalent, I think that we now all know someone who has passed away from Covid-19. We need to give our teams time to grieve.
