Prognostications and Comments on 2021
I hope that you and yours are enjoying a warm, safe holiday. Although we’re in a pandemic, this was unexpectedly the busiest pre-holiday season I’ve seen in 25 years, both for us and for our clients. As 2020 draws to a close, we continue to live in truly unpredictable times.
As it is that time of year to reflect and look ahead, here are my predictions of what we’ll see in 2021:
- The year of Latin America. We’ll see companies increasingly based in Latin America, or co-located between Latin America and Miami, San Francisco or elsewhere. Businesses will increasingly build out resources in this region.
- Greater focus on startup companies with funding, who will be coming out of their stealth mode and needing strategic human resources (HR) services.
- Performance management will have more focus.
- Higher attention will be paid to compensation strategies and programs to attract and retain employees.
- Companies will revisit their business department models and elevate their business partners.
- Further change in the executive suite: The head-spinning amount of changes we’ve seen recently will continue, as people who stayed in place during the pandemic realize that now is a very good time to move (joining those who already moved this year).
- Dispersed-first: Businesses like ours, who have gone silent on location and become more dispersed and “work-from-anywhere” will find more clients who are also like that.
- Technology will increasingly take over people’s jobs, allowing them to focus more on strategic activities.
Next year will be a year of healing and recovery for the U.S., and the world. For the tech world, I predict it may be one of the fastest moving and most energetic years that we’ll ever experience.

THE COVID CORNER |
Winter Holidays in 2020
In the midst of winter’s longest hours, the pandemic is unfortunately still impacting us. The arrival of vaccines, and the likelihood that many of us will have access to them in the coming months, offer hope. It’s a season to give—if you’re in a position to do so—to help those in need, and to follow safe health practices.
How are you observing winter holidays? At the end of a long, unusual and trying year, even with pandemic restrictions in place, I hope you're having a peaceful break spending time with loved ones -- even if it’s quietly, over Zoom.
