In 2023, Harvard Business Review reports that over 50% of managers are experiencing burnout. Middle managers are typically executing key strategies while training new or junior employees (and often under-resourced), per SHRM. Not surprisingly HR leaders rank highest in burnout. HR was hit hard by the pandemic, and also faces ongoing stressors like taking on employees’ emotional issues; 75% said they find it hard to achieve work-life balance.
HR burnout is real — as our Search team knows from the hundreds of executives we spoke with in the last year. The solution? Our team recently traded tips. People with physical effects of burnout said they take small, but intentional steps to alleviate them. Our team likes guidance from peers–like these HR pros’ strategies and also HBR’s case for kindness at work and radical self-care.
My own tip: Seize August’s opportunities to enjoy summer’s final days (no guilt). A half-day off may leave you feeling refreshed, and 100% more ready to support your team. When we meet, we want to see the photos!
