Q&A — How Do You Hire an HR Executive in Today’s Market?
As a veteran of the tech market, I’ve learned in over 26 years working with this industry to survive and thrive in any economic situation.
In conversations with many CEOs, and executive leaders just recently, in a range of businesses—from hyper-growth, pre-IPO startups to Fortune 500 global companies—I’ve addressed the questions below. Here’s my best advice for CEOs needing to hire a Head of HR.
What’s the market like?
This is the worst hiring market I’ve seen in my life. Candidates are accepting offers, but may then back out, for example, over the weekend when a former manager offers them more money, less stress and work-from-anywhere. In-demand candidates are taking a few days to consider up to four offers at a time. Open requisitions may sit vacant for months. In this market you need to assess and tune your tactics if you want to win.
I really need to hire our Head of HR now but heard that searches are dragging on. What should I do to speed this along?
|
||||||
We’ve been searching and interviewing for months but can’t find anyone good enough.
Get practical about what skills and knowledge you must have versus what’s nice to have. Be ready to hire someone who can’t do everything, but who can do what is most important. They can outsource the rest.
Now is not the time to wish for a zebra-monkey-fish or a purple unicorn. Do you need someone who can set up talent acquisition (TA) and super-charge recruiting? Then find someone who’s done that and can roll up their sleeves. Want more culture? Break that goal into pieces and select and recruit for each part. For example, it should include communications, performance management, onboarding and diversity and inclusion (D&I). Want someone who can put in systems and processes for high growth? Find someone who knows how to use those systems and has worked to put them in place before. You don’t need to hire a new best friend or a 20-year HR partner. Find someone who can do the job now, for the next 24 to 36 months.
Don’t view hiring an HR leader as hiring someone who will be at your organization forever. Hire someone for now who can get you from 75 employees to 200, or from 500 to 1,200. Think shorter-term and focus on the benefits of getting someone in today, versus spending another day without the leader you need. |
